Welding Curtain Walls

Industrial tinted welding curtain wall in a factory setting, heavy-duty protective curtains shielding welding areas from UV light and sparks.

OVERVIEW

Welding curtain walls are designed for larger welding bays and fabrication areas where portable welding screens simply cannot provide adequate coverage. We supply these curtain walls in heavy-duty fire-retardant vinyl that blocks harmful UV radiation and contains sparks within the welding zone.

Every curtain wall is made to order, so we can accommodate virtually any configuration — from a compact single-bay enclosure to a multi-hundred-square-metre partitioning system. Our UK trade clients rely on these walls to keep fabrication shops compliant with HSE workplace exposure limits while maintaining a flexible workshop layout.

Designed for Speed and Flexibility

Welding Curtain Wall Benefits

Industrial welding curtain walls resist flying sparks from MIG, TIG, and arc welding as well as grinding operations, whilst still providing a tinted line of sight from both sides of the curtain.

  • Create a safer work area in line with HSE guidelines
  • Shield nearby personnel from bright arcs, sparks, and UV flash
  • A quick, cost-effective solution for dividing fabrication bays
  • Improve workflow efficiency by clearly defining welding zones
  • Fully relocatable — take them down and reuse on another site

Welding Curtains for Safety

AKON welding curtains are engineered to help you meet UK workplace safety requirements. The tinted line of sight uses a UV-blocking film to protect nearby workers from indirect viewing of the arc.

  • Fire-retardant vinyl rated for welding and hot-works environments
  • 5-year warranty on all manufacturing defects
  • Compliant with EN 1598 welding curtain standards
  • Spark- and spatter-resistant construction
  • Supplied throughout the UK and Ireland

Design Any Layout You Need

Simple Fitting

Curtain walls arrive with grommets at the top, making fitting quick and straightforward — with or without a curtain track.

Welding Rated

Our welding vinyl walls carry fire-retardant ratings and UV-reducing properties suitable for professional welding environments.

Protects Welders

Hanging welding curtain walls are ideal for shielding welders and nearby personnel from arc flash and sparks.

Reduce Noise

Thick PVC welding curtains dampen workshop noise whilst also blocking harmful UV rays from the welding arc.

Welding Fume Containment Solutions

Capture Fumes From Floor to Ceiling

An effective way to contain welding fumes within designated areas — and prevent them from spreading across an entire facility — is to install vinyl curtain walls running floor to ceiling. Durable, fire-retardant vinyl withstands the intense heat and sparks associated with welding operations.

By forming a physical barrier, these curtain walls confine fumes to the intended welding zone. This is essential for maintaining air quality throughout the rest of the workshop and for meeting HSE workplace exposure limits for welding fume (WEL). Pairing curtain walls with local exhaust ventilation (LEV) gives you a robust fume-management strategy that satisfies both COSHH assessments and HSE inspectors.

Keep Your Facility Clean

Beyond fume control, vinyl curtain walls are straightforward to fit and highly versatile. Mounted on industrial tracking, they can be retracted or relocated as your workshop layout changes. Every curtain is custom-sized to suit your specific workstation dimensions.

By limiting the spread of airborne particulates and welding fume, these walls help you meet COSHH obligations and improve overall air quality on the shop floor. A cleaner workspace also means less downtime spent on housekeeping between shifts.

Use With Welding Strip Curtains

Combination Uses

For machine guarding, combining welding strip curtains with welding curtain walls provides comprehensive safety in industrial settings. The curtain walls act as a solid barrier to contain sparks, spatter, and harmful fumes, whilst the strip curtains offer a flexible screen for machine access points.

This dual approach reduces the risk of accidental contact with moving machinery and keeps welding byproducts away from neighbouring work areas. Together, they form a thorough and compliant solution for managing workshop hazards in line with UK health and safety regulations.

Choose From Many Configurations

Hanging Welding Curtains

Hanging welding curtains can isolate individual or multiple welding bays, or serve as a single dividing wall across a fabrication shop. We design and install the curtains in virtually any configuration to suit your workshop layout.

When hung from overhead tracking, the curtains retract fully to give you a completely open space — ideal for moving large fabrications or when a lorry needs clear access. Radius corners allow the track to follow the building's contours smoothly.

Material Options

We offer three material options for vinyl welding curtain walls. The tinted option (0.35 mm welding-grade vinyl) provides a limited line of sight through the curtain, whilst the opaque option (18 oz welding-grade vinyl) blocks visibility entirely.

For close-proximity heavy welding and hot-works tasks, you can also choose canvas welding curtains — commonly known as hot-works welding curtains. These are popular with UK shipyard and structural steel contractors who need maximum heat resistance.

Curtain Features

Tinted Vision Panels

Vision panels can be added to allow for a line
of sight through the curtain. The panels can be made
taller or shorter per your request.

Anchor Straps

Velcro straps hold your curtain in place if a
breeze or if a more secure curtain is needed.
These anchors feature Velcro straps that loop
through a D-ring, which is anchored into the
cement floor. Typically spaced every 1.2 m.

Seal Velcro

Seal Velcro, also known as adhesive Velcro, sticks
onto your curtain and can be installed in the field.
Please note that stick-on velcro is not ideal for
cold temperature applications or high-frequency
use.

Chain Weights

If you have a slight breeze or are power washing
near the curtain, then we can add a galvanized
lightweight chain weight to the bottom of the
curtain.

Connecting Curtains

Velcro

Velcro is used to connect curtain sections
together to form larger curtain walls. The
Velcro also serves as an access point for
larger curtains and makes them easier to
install.

Magnets

Seal magnets are an ideal way to attach curtains
to each other or adjacent steel walls and beams.
Best utilized in dusty areas that would clog up
Velcro.

Entry Options

industrial-curtain-options (5)

Sewn-In Strip Doors

Strip doors that are sewn into the curtain are
ideal for light foot traffic. This allows for quick
movement of people into and out of the
industrial curtains.

Free-Standing Strip Doors

For motorized traffic, a free-standing steel frame
strip door is ideal. The steel frame takes the
stress off of the curtain wall, ensuring longevity
and performance for motor traffic and high use.

Swinging Impact Doors

A free-standing industrial swinging door can
also be provided for access. Also known as
impact doors, these heavy-duty doors can
take a lot of abuse from carts, forklifts, or
heavy foot traffic. View Styles

Roll-Up Doors

Supported with a free-standing steel frame,
the power roll-up doors can be opened and
closed via remote from a forklift. Door
styles and prices vary based on the frequency
of opening and closing, speed requirements,
and size. View Styles

Common Layouts

AKON can supply almost any layout you can imagine. Below are some of the most common styles. They can be single-sided, double-sided, triple-sided, four-sided, or multiple straight runs to create complete enclosures. Simply tell AKON your required design, and we will fabricate it exactly to your specifications. For customised layouts, sketch your design and upload it using our online RFQ form. See the button below.

How to Measure

Width

  • Measure the distance that you are trying to cover
    • We will generally add 5% to this dimension to give your curtain a proper drape.
    • When you receive your quote, the hardware width shown will be the actual overall width.

Height

  • Measure the distance from the floor to the mounting point
    • We will subtract 7.62 cm to allow for the hardware and keep your curtain just off the ground.
      • If you choose the floor sweep option, we still subtract 7.62 cm. This allows the floor sweep to sit lightly on the floor while the main curtain hangs just above it.
      • If you have a sloped ceiling, please provide the high-point height and the low-point height. We will assume a straight, linear slope. More Info Here On Sloped Ceilings

Common Questions

What is the spacing from the bottom of the track to the top of the curtain?
Standard curtains have a gap of approximately 2–2.5 cm between the bottom of the track and the top of the curtain.

Spacing from Track

What are the dimensions of the track?

Can the track be cut to size on site?
Yes. The track is designed to be cut on site using a hacksaw or a Sawzall.

How much width does the radius corner add to the length?
The radius corner is 61 cm (24") in diameter. It will add approximately 61 cm (2 ft) to each dimension.
For example, if you have 305 cm (120") of curtain track, adding a radius corner will make the overall length of side “A” about 366 cm (144").

How does the track go together?
The track is modular and will arrive in sections with a simple bolt-together design.

How close together do I need the track supports?
Track supports should typically be spaced approximately every 1.5 m. The farther apart the supports are, the more the track may deflect. For shorter curtains, supports can sometimes be spaced a little farther apart. You will receive enough support brackets with your order to achieve this 1.5 m spacing.

Can I simply drill straight through the track and into the ceiling / structure?
Yes. This is called a flush-mount installation and is very common. Simply drill through the centre of the track and fix it into your structure using wood screws, bolts, Tek screws, etc. Space the fixings roughly every 0.9–1.5 m.

How hard is it to install the industrial curtain track?
Installation is straightforward. All components fit together and are secured with set screws. The process is intuitive, but if you have any difficulty, simply call or email us and we will guide you through it.

Will the track rust? Can it be used in wet environments?
The track is hot-dip galvanised (HDG), a process commonly used to protect steel from corrosion in demanding environments. It offers maintenance-free longevity for decades. The corrosion rate of hot-dip galvanised steel is typically about 1/30 that of bare steel in the same environment.
FAQ

Will the Vinyl hold up to flying sparks?

  • The welding curtain vinyl material will hold up to hot flying sparks from a distance as shown in the picture below. Keep in mind there are different kinds of welding sparks. There are welding sparks from standard welding and also from grinding metal which our welding vinyl curtains work great for. And then there are welding sparks which come from other processes which are very large and sometimes molten. For that type of an application you would need to use the canvas welding curtain material which is made for heavy close range welding.

welding-screen-for-sparks

What's the difference between clear Vinyl and tinted Vinyl?

  • The vinyl that we use for clear welding curtains is the same vinyl use for the tinted welding curtains. Both of them can be used for welding applications except the clear material will not block any harmful UV light. If that is not a concern then both welding curtain materials should work fine.

Are they Approved Hot Work Welding Curtains?

  • Hot works welding curtains are a type of material that is used for heavy welding operations. These are applications where there will be high temperatures, sparks, molten splashing, and heavy slag present. To meet this specification you would need to choose the canvas shade material.
