How Many Strips Do You Need?

The table below shows you how many strips you will need to cover your opening (regardless of the height). For instance, a 3.0m wide opening using 200mm strips with Minimum Overlap would need 20 strips to cover the area. If you had an 8.0m opening (which is wider than what is on this chart), you would take the requirement for a 4.0m opening x 2.

Choosing The Correct Strips and Overlap

Use this simple matrix to select the ideal strip width and overlap for your application.

Maximum overlap is about 80% to 100% strip overlap
Minimum overlap is about 40% to 56% strip overlap

I want steel plates. Are the heights of the strips measured from the top of the PVC or the top of the steel plates?
The height is measured from the top of the strip to the bottom of the strip.

How do you cut the strips in the field?
You use a utility knife and a straight edge to keep the cut straight.

How do I know which size roll (width and thickness) to buy?
We recommend choosing your roll size based on the type of traffic passing through the doorway:

• 200mm wide x 2mm thick: Best for pedestrian doors and light usage (up to ~3m high).
• 300mm wide x 3mm thick: Ideal for medium traffic, including pallet trucks and occasional forklifts (up to ~5m high).
• 400mm wide x 4mm thick: Heavy-duty grade for large external openings, intense forklift traffic, and heavy lorries (over 5m high).

How do I calculate how many rolls I need?
This depends on your doorway width, height, and the overlap you intend to use.

• Quick Rule of Thumb: For a standard doorway using 200mm strips with a partial overlap, you generally need enough length to cover the width of the door plus roughly 50% more to account for the overlap.
• Tip: Always buy slightly more than you need to account for cutting and future replacements.

What hardware do I need to hang the bulk roll?
To create a curtain from a bulk roll, you will need a hanging rail (either Hook-On or Quickmount) and, if using the Hook-On system, a set of stainless steel plates/clamps to rivet onto the top of each cut strip. We sell these rails and plates separately in our "Hardware" section.

Are these strips compliant with health and safety regulations?
Yes. Our welding strips are fully compliant with ISO 25980, EN 1598, and AWS F2.3. They are specifically engineered to filter out 100% of dangerous UV radiation and blue light, ensuring your workplace meets strict international safety standards for welding operations.

Can I just use standard red or tinted PVC instead?
No. Standard tinted PVC does not block the specific harmful UV wavelengths generated by welding arcs. Using non-compliant PVC puts workers and passersby at risk of "arc eye" (flash burn), retinal damage, and skin burns. You must use ISO 25980 certified Screenflex PVC for welding protection.

Is this PVC fire retardant?
Yes. Welding generates sparks and hot splatter (up to 1,500°C), so these strips are chemically treated to be fire retardant and self-extinguishing. They will not support combustion if hit by hot debris.

Can I use these outdoors?
Yes. The operating temperature range is -15°C to +50°C, making them suitable for outdoor welding bays or unheated workshops.

Do they protect against welding sparks?
Yes. The PVC is designed to repel welding spatter. However, for heavy-duty grinding or direct sustained contact with molten metal, you should ensure the curtain is positioned at a safe distance from the direct arc source to prolong the life of the strips.
