Insulated Garage Door Curtains

Heavy-duty insulated garage door curtain in neutral vinyl covering a residential garage entrance for enhanced thermal efficiency and weather protection

OVERVIEW

Insulated garage door curtains hang directly behind your garage door to create an extra thermal barrier. They reduce heat loss in winter, keep the space cooler in summer, and cut down on draughts that come through the door seals. The curtains slide to one side on a track when you need to open the door, and pull back across when it's closed. They suit garages used as workshops, hobby rooms, gyms, or general storage where temperature control matters.

Advantages of Insulated

Heavy-duty exterior garage door curtains in a neutral fabric finish, fully covering a residential garage opening for privacy and weather control.
Wide insulated garage door curtains installed over a large garage opening, designed for temperature control and energy savings

An insulated garage door curtain offers several practical benefits for comfort and energy efficiency:

  • Energy Efficiency: The insulated panels reduce heat loss in winter and limit heat gain in summer, which lowers the demand on your heating or cooling system.
  • Temperature Control: The curtain maintains a more stable temperature inside the garage, making it more comfortable for work, hobbies, or storage of temperature-sensitive items.
  • Noise Reduction: The padded construction absorbs sound, which reduces noise from outside and keeps workshop noise from travelling into the house.
  • Moisture Control: The thermal barrier helps prevent condensation forming on cold surfaces, protecting stored tools, vehicles, and equipment from damp and mould.
  • Easy Installation: The curtains hang from a track mounted in the door jamb. No permanent modifications to the garage are needed, and the curtain slides aside when not in use.
  • Privacy: A solid curtain behind the door blocks the view into your garage, adding an extra layer of security and privacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What are insulated garage door curtains made from?

They are made from reinforced vinyl outer skins with an internal thermal foam core. This combination provides durability and strong insulation to block heat transfer and stabilise temperatures.

How do insulated garage door curtains improve energy efficiency?

They reduce heat loss in winter and limit heat gain in summer by creating a thermal barrier behind the door. This cuts the demand on your heating or cooling system and lowers energy bills.

Are insulated garage door curtains easy to install?

Yes. They hang from a track mounted in the door jamb using basic tools. Most models include all mounting hardware and can be fitted by one person in under an hour.

Do insulated garage door curtains reduce noise?

Yes. The insulating foam and vinyl layers absorb sound, reducing noise from outside and making the garage quieter for workshop use or hobbies.

Do the curtains help prevent condensation?

Yes. The thermal barrier reduces the temperature difference between the garage air and cold surfaces, which helps prevent moisture build-up and protects stored items from damp and mould.

Can I use the curtains with a motorised garage door?

Yes. The curtain hangs on a separate track behind the door. You slide the curtain open before operating the door, and close it again once the door is down.

Can the curtains be used all year round?

Yes. They work in both winter and summer. In cold months they retain heat; in warm months they help keep the garage cooler by blocking radiated heat from the door.

How do I clean insulated garage door curtains?

Wipe them down with a damp cloth and mild detergent. The vinyl surface is easy to clean and resistant to most workshop grime and splashes.

Are insulated garage door curtains fire safe?

Yes. The materials meet commercial fire safety standards, making them safe for use in residential and commercial garages alongside vehicles and workshop equipment.

Where does the curtain track mount?

The track generally mounts inside the door jamb, keeping it clear of the garage door mechanism. If you don't have a roller door, you have more flexibility to mount the track on the wall face or further inside the garage.

How much space does the curtain take up when retracted?

When pulled back, the curtain takes up approximately 15 cm per side of the track, or around 30 cm of total width when fully stacked.

How much storage space does the curtain need when folded back?

Roughly a quarter of the curtain's full width. For example, a 3 metre wide curtain takes up about 0.75 metres when stacked to one side.

Designed For Speed and Flexibility

Operation

The curtain slides from side to side on roller hooks. You can also lift it off the hooks entirely and store it when it's not needed for the season. The track typically mounts inside the door jamb, keeping it clear of the garage door mechanism. Full-height Velcro strips along the side walls are available for a tighter seal. Optional magnet or Velcro splits in the centre give you quick walk-through access without sliding the whole curtain aside. In areas with high winds, Velcro splits are recommended over magnets.

Improves Aesthetics

Premium accordion-style insulated outdoor curtains folding neatly, designed for quick storage and weather-resilient performance.

Premium Accordion Folding Insulated Curtain

For a cleaner, more polished look, choose the accordion-fold insulated curtain. This model uses sealed pockets for the insulating batting, which gives it a more controlled, uniform fold when stacked. The finished appearance is neater and suits garages where aesthetics are important alongside thermal performance.

R-Values To Choose From

Temperature Control R-Values

Two R-Value options are available for our insulated garage door curtains. R-Value measures how well a material resists heat flow: the higher the number, the better the insulation. For a curtain that will stay in place year-round, the higher R-Value offers the best long-term energy savings. For seasonal or short-term use, the standard option keeps costs down while still providing a noticeable thermal improvement.

  • R3 – Standard Separation – Retractable and Stationary
  • R6 – High Separation – Retractable and Stationary

Control Air Flow

Floor Engagement

Cold air can creep under a curtain that stops just above the floor, reducing the thermal barrier's effectiveness. A floor sweep seals this gap. The 20 cm tall sweep attaches to the bottom of the curtain with Velcro and hangs 15 cm below it, engaging the floor surface. If you move the curtain to a different location with a different floor level, you can swap in a taller or shorter sweep to maintain the seal.

How to Measure

Width

  • Measure the distance that you are trying to cover.
    • Add 5% to that dimension for proper drape and coverage

Height

  • Measure the distance from the floor to the mounting point.
    • Take that dimension and subtract 7.5 cm
      • By subtracting 7.5 cm for the hardware, the curtain will sit just above the floor and allow the floor sweep to rest lightly on the surface.

Common Questions

What is the spacing from the bottom of the track to the top of the curtain?
  • Standard curtains have approximately 9.5 cm to 2.5 cm of a gap from the bottom of the track to the top of the curtain.
Spacing from Track

What are the dimensions of the track?

Can the track be cut to size as required on site?
  • Yes, the track is designed to be cut on site using a hacksaw or sawzall.
How much width does the radius corner add to the length?
  • A radius corner has a 0.6 m radius. So if you input 3.0 m for curtain length you will end up with approximately 3.7 m once the radius corner is attached. If that is too long, simply cut the track on site — the radius will still function correctly.
How does the track go together?
  • The track is modular in design and will arrive in sections that bolt together easily.
How close together do I need the track supports?
  • The track should be supported approximately every 1.5 m. For lighter curtains, spacing can be up to 2.4 m. Your order will include enough supports for the 1.5 m spacing.
Can I simply drill straight through the track and into the ceiling / structure?
  • Yes. This is known as a flush-mount installation. Drill through the centre of the track and secure it with screws or bolts. Space the fixings roughly every 0.9–1.5 m.
How hard is it to install the industrial curtain track?
  • Installation is straightforward. All components connect with set screws. If you have any issues, simply call or email us and we will guide you through the process.
Will the track rust? Can it be used in wet environments?
  • The track is hot-dip galvanised (HDG), offering long-term corrosion resistance even in harsh environments. It typically corrodes at around 1/30 of the rate of bare steel in similar conditions.

Outer Layers

The outer layers of our insulated curtains are made of both 13oz and 18oz vinyl which is reinforced with a polyester scrim. It is waterproof fabric that is easy to wash down should it become dirty. The material will not absorb liquids and stains so it will look great for many years. 18oz coated vinyl is ideal for outdoor use for temperatures going as low as -29° C. Please be aware that if folded below these temperatures or blown around in the wind the vinyl may crack. If you select outdoor use on this form you will receive the 18oz material.

Inner Batting

The inside insulation is a poly fibre insulation that does not use fibreglass. The material is wedged inside the skins and stitched in place so that it will not settle towards the bottom. The insulated thermal garage curtains get their insulating properties from the air space that this batting creates.

Weights | Thickness

  • R3 – 7.2 mm Thick, 3.8 oz per square foot
  • R6 – 13.5 mm Thick, 4.75 oz per square foot

To calculate: take your (W x H) × (oz per square foot) = Total Weight kg

Features

Curtain Features

Curtain Valances

A valance is made from the same material as the
lower curtain. They are used to seal the opening
above the curtain. This is generally the space from
the roof deck to the bottom of the joist or purlin.
They can be rectangular or follow the slope of the roof.

Floor Sweeps

A floor sweep seals the open area between the
curtain and the floor. It attaches to the main
curtain by Velcro. They are 15 cm tall and as wide
as the entire length of the curtain. These are
ideal for controlling dust, fumes, odours and
other undesirable elements. They can also be
replaced in the future should the friction from
the floor wear them out.

Anchor Straps

Velcro straps hold your curtain in place if wind
is present or a more secure curtain is required.
These anchors feature Velcro straps which loop
through a D-ring which is anchored into the
concrete floor. Typically spaced every 1.22 m.

Seal Velcro

Seal Velcro, also known as adhesive Velcro, sticks
onto your curtain and can be installed on site.
Please note that this is not ideal for low-temperature
applications or high-frequency use.

Chain Weights

If you have a slight breeze or are power washing
near the curtain then we can add a galvanised
4.8 mm chain weight to the bottom of the curtain.

Connecting Curtains

Velcro

Velcro is used to connect curtain sections
together to form larger curtain walls. The
Velcro also serves as an access point for
larger curtains and makes them easier to
install.

Magnets

Seal magnets are an ideal way to attach curtains
to each other or adjacent steel walls and beams.
Best utilised in dusty areas that would clog up
Velcro.

Entry Options

Sewn In Strip Doors

Strip doors that are sewn into the curtain are
ideal for light foot traffic. This allows for quick
movement of people into and out of the
industrial curtains.

Free Standing Strip Doors

For motorised traffic a free-standing steel frame
strip door is ideal. The steel frame takes the
stress off the curtain wall, ensuring longevity
and performance for motor traffic and high use.

Swinging Impact Doors

A free-standing industrial swinging door can
also be provided for access. Also known as
impact doors, these heavy-duty doors can
withstand a lot of use from trolleys, fork-lift
trucks or heavy foot traffic.

Roll Up Doors

Supported with a free-standing steel frame,
the powered roll up doors can be opened and
closed via remote from a fork-lift truck. Door
styles and prices vary based on frequency
of opening and closing, speed requirements
and size.

FAQ

How much more expensive are the industrial insulated curtains versus the standard curtains?

  • Our industrial insulated curtains are about 3x the investment of our standard industrial curtains. Customers often ask if they should just purchase a standard curtain to save money. Our answer is generally based on how long you intend to use the curtain. For instance, if you plan to utilise the divider curtain for many years then you will recoup your investment with energy savings. If you only plan to use the curtain for one or two seasons then you could save money by going with the standard curtains. Keep in mind the standard industrial curtains have an R1 insulation value.

What is R Value?

  • The insulation value of a thermal insulated curtain wall is measured by what is called an R value. In basic terms, R value is the capacity of an insulating material to resist heat flow. The higher the R value, the greater the insulating performance. AKON provides R3 and R6 insulated industrial curtains. The map below shows insulation R value recommendations as a point of reference.

Should I choose R3 or R6?

  • We find R3 is a good fit for most applications. You should take into consideration the guidance above and the length of time you expect to use the thermal industrial curtains. The colder your location and the longer you will rely on the curtains, the more likely we are to recommend the higher R6 material.

When folded up how much space does it take?

  • The insulated industrial curtains fold up to about 6.4 cm per 30 cm of curtain width. So a 3 m wide curtain would fold up to approximately 64 cm.
