Laser Barrier Curtains

Blackout laser barrier curtains hanging on an industrial track system for laser safety and protection in a workshop setting.

OVERVIEW

Laser barrier curtains provide reliable protection for sensitive work areas where Class 3B and Class 4 lasers are in use. The heavy-duty materials are configured to suit virtually any enclosure layout your application demands.

Our laser curtains glide side to side on an industrial curtain track system, or can be static-mounted to wall brackets. They are lightweight, easy to reposition, and collapse into a compact stack when drawn back. Typical uses include portable laser barriers, full-blackout laser enclosures, and bespoke laser curtain panels. Class 4 laser curtains are available across our full product range.

Selecting the Right Material for Your Application

What to Know and Who to Ask

To select the correct material for your laser application, you will need to gather the following details about the laser device and its intended use. This guide is a good starting point, but you should consult your Laser Safety Officer (LSO) or Laser Protection Adviser (LPA) before making your final material choice. Sample materials can also be sent for independent testing and review on request.

The Power Output

This is the amount of energy the laser beam emits every second. It is usually expressed in watts (W), kilowatts (kW), or milliwatts (mW).

You can find this information on the housing label, in the user handbook, on the manufacturer’s website, or in the machine’s software interface.

Laser wavelength chart showing different colors and corresponding nanometer values by AKON

Wavelength

The wavelength, measured in nanometres (nm), indicates the type of light the laser emits — visible, infrared, or ultraviolet. The wavelength is typically listed alongside the total power on the same label or datasheet. See the example below:

Direct and diffused laser beam comparison showing light spread difference by AKON

Beam

A laser’s beam type — diffused or direct — describes how the light is emitted, how it spreads, and how it strikes the target surface.

  • Direct Beam: Narrow, focused, and very high intensity. Used for engraving, cutting, and precision marking.
  • Diffused Beam: Spread out, lower intensity. Used in barcode scanners, laser levels, and alignment tools.

Determining Laser Application Type: Direct vs. Diffused

Laser barrier curtains (6) resized
Laser barrier curtains (9) resized

To determine the correct material for your laser application, follow these steps:

Step 1: Understand the Application.

  • Direct Beam:
    • The laser beam can strike the curtain or barrier directly.
    • Requires materials rated for direct beam contact.
  • Diffused Beam:
    • The curtain is only exposed to reflections or scattered light.
    • Materials rated for diffused exposure are suitable.

Step 2: Check the laser label or user handbook.

  • Look for terms describing beam types:
    • "Collimated": Indicates a direct beam.
    • "Divergent": Indicates a diffused beam.

Step 3: Review the beam divergence datasheet.

  • Beam divergence can also indicate the type:
    • Low divergence (<2 mrad): Direct
    • High divergence (>10 mrad): Diffused

Step 4: Visual inspection (if safe to do so)

  • Observe where the laser beam lands on a surface:
    • Clear, sharp dot: Most likely direct
    • Broad glow or line: Likely diffused

Tip for Buyers: If you are unsure which material to select, speak to the laser manufacturer or your Laser Protection Adviser with your beam specifications to hand.

Curtain Track For Movement

laser barrier safety curtains

6 Curtain Track Styles

Heavy-duty curtain track and hardware components for laser barrier curtains, showing mounts, rollers, and supports.

Hanging Track

Industrial curtain track with roller hooks allows you to slide the laser safety curtains from side to side, giving full access to both sides of your work area. The heavy-duty curtain track is modular in design and bolts together with straightforward fixings.

Free Standing Track

Where ceiling-mounted track is not practical, a floor-supported framework provides full overhead clearance. Free-standing laser curtains are held in place by uprights with base plates. The uprights are typically spaced every 2.4 m to 3 m, allowing the curtain to be drawn back completely when not in use.

laser curtains on curtain track

Easy Glide Rollers

The roller hooks let the curtain glide smoothly from side to side with minimal friction. They are spaced evenly along the top of the curtain and clip into the grommets. When the curtain is not needed, it lifts off the hooks quickly — unlike clamp-on rollers that require tools to remove.

Easy Installation

Each track is supplied with end stops to contain the rollers inside the rail. Track supports should be fixed approximately every 1.5 m; the greater the spacing, the greater the deflection under load. For lighter curtains, supports can be spaced up to around 2.4 m apart.

Laser Barrier Covers

Laser barrier safety curtain covering a window opening, providing protection against stray laser radiation.

Other Features

Window laser safety covers attach to the wall or doorframe around the observation window using grommets, magnets, or hook-and-loop tape. They are an economical option that is simple to fit, remove, or store when not in use. We supply covers rated up to 2,150 W/cm² for 100 seconds.

  • Grommets – Inserted into your bespoke cover, allowing it to hang on hooks or trolley runners
  • Hook & Loop Tape – Applied along the window edges; adheres to the wall or door surround, providing full coverage
  • Magnets – Fitted to the cover edges and the wall or door surround, holding the curtain firmly in place
  • Cleanroom Layer – An outer layer with antibacterial and antistatic properties for straightforward cleaning

Laser Curtain Valances

Blackout curtain valance used with laser barrier curtains to block light leakage and complete the protective coverage.

Optional Valance

A valance is used where there is a gap between the mounting hardware and the top edge of the laser safety curtain. Ideally the valance should hang 15 cm to 30 cm below the curtain track to close the light path completely.

Need Portable Laser Curtains?

Mobile laser barrier on wheels with retractable curtain for flexible industrial laser safety protection

Mobile Laser Blocking | Rigid Panel

Rigid laser panels are essential where hand-held welding lasers or high-output fibre lasers are in operation. Our rigid panels prevent accidental exposure to hazardous radiation, significantly reducing the risk of injury in busy workshop environments.

If you require laser barrier protection rated up to 10,000 W/cm² irradiance (tested for 100 seconds at a 1 mm beam diameter), the rigid panel is the ideal choice. We supply multiple standard sizes and can configure any layout to suit your work cell.

Mobile Laser Blocking | Soft Panel

Portable laser curtain screens are available from stock and ready for dispatch. If you need laser barrier protection rated up to 575 W/cm² (tested at 1064 nm with a 1 mm beam diameter), a portable laser barrier screen is the most practical option.

The divider screens can form a single partition, a two-sided enclosure, a three-sided enclosure, or a full four-sided booth, along with many other configurations. We supply these portable barrier screens with robust steel framework, lockable castors, and laser-rated fabric — an excellent protection solution for compact laser environments.

Retractable Laser Blocking | Rigid Panel

Retractable laser barrier curtains roll up neatly when not in use. Unlike floor-standing styles, the retractable roll-up laser blocking curtain has a very compact footprint. It is hand-pulled with spring-tension operation, and the shade extends up to 7.5 m.

The SB-9000 Laser Curtain provides a space-saving alternative to barriers that rest on the floor — ideal for busy production cells where floor area is at a premium.

How to Measure

Width

  • Measure the distance that you are trying to cover
    • Using our input form input that dimension.
    • When you receive your quote, the hardware width will be the actual width and the curtains will be wider for the drape.

Height

  • Measure the distance from the floor to the mounting point
    • We will subtract 7cm to account for the hardware to keep your curtain just off of the ground.
    • If you have a sloped ceiling please provide us with the high point height and the low point height. We will assume it is a linear straight slope.

Common Questions

What is the spacing from the bottom of the track to the top of the curtain?
  • Standard curtains have approximately 25mm - 95mm of a gap from the bottom of the track to the top of the curtain.
Spacing from Track

What are the dimensions of the track?

Can the track be cut to size as required on site?
  • Yes, the track is made to be field cut on site using a hack saw or Sawzall.
How much width does the radius corner add to the length?
  • A radius corner has a 60cm radius. So if you input 3m for curtain length you will end up with 3.6m when you attach the radius corner. If that is too long then simply cut the track onsite and the radius will still work.
Can you make a custom radius corner
  • Custom radius corners are not possible at this time. If you application must have custom radius corners you might considering getting a curtain track from another supplier and the curtains from AKON.
How does the track go together?
  • The track is modular in design and will arrive in pieces that have a simple bolt together design.
How close together do I need the track supports?
  • The track should be supported approximately every 1.5m with a track support. The farther apart the track supports, the greater the deflection. If you have a relatively short in height curtain then you could space the supports out a little farther. You will receive enough track supports with your order to achieve this 1.5m spacing.
Can I simply drill straight through the track and into the ceiling / structure?
  • Yes. This is called a flush mount install and is very common. Simply drill through the middle of the track and use a small wood screw, bolt, Tek screw...etc. into your structure. Space the holes about every 0.9m - 1.5m.
How hard is it to install the curtain track?
  • It is very easy. All of the components simply fit into each other and connect with set screws. The installation is very intuitive. If you have any difficulty simply call or email us and we will walk you through the process.
