OVERVIEW
Industrial canvas welding curtains are purpose-built for heavy-duty welding applications where standard vinyl curtains would not withstand the heat. Constructed from flame-retardant fibreglass canvas, these curtains operate across a temperature range of approximately 177°C to 1,650°C depending on the grade of material selected. They provide an effective barrier against radiant heat, UV flash, sparks, and molten spatter, making them the preferred choice for close-proximity welding, heavy grinding, and hot-works zones in fabrication workshops across the UK and Ireland.

Canvas Hotwork Curtains
Close-Range Welding
For close-range welding operations, canvas welding curtains deliver the robust protection that standard vinyl simply cannot match. The flame-retardant fibreglass construction withstands direct contact with molten spatter and hot slag, making canvas the material of choice in shipyards, steel fabrication shops, and heavy engineering workshops. These curtains shield neighbouring workers from harmful UV radiation, intense radiant heat, and flying sparks, significantly reducing the risk of flash burn and fire. Where vinyl curtains would soften, distort, or melt under sustained heat exposure, canvas maintains its structural integrity and continues to perform reliably.
Canvas Welding Curtains Vs. Vinyl
Canvas welding curtains offer distinct advantages over vinyl alternatives in demanding workshop environments. The key difference lies in heat tolerance: canvas is rated for temperatures up to 1,650°C depending on grade, whilst vinyl curtains are limited to approximately 60–70°C before they begin to degrade. In heavy grinding operations where sharp metal fragments and intense sparks are common, canvas resists cutting and melting far more effectively than PVC. Canvas is also fully opaque, providing a total visual barrier for welding zones—an important consideration in busy workshops where non-welding personnel pass frequently. For lighter-duty applications such as tack welding or robot cell screening, vinyl remains a cost-effective option, but for close-range manual welding with significant heat output, canvas is the superior long-term investment.
Canvas Welding Enclosures
Enclosing welding operations with canvas curtains delivers measurable improvements in safety, productivity, and air quality management. The opaque curtain walls confine sparks, spatter, and UV radiation within the welding cell, protecting surrounding workers and reducing the risk of fire in adjacent areas. Fume containment is markedly improved because the canvas barrier channels extracted air toward ventilation and LEV systems, rather than allowing welding fumes to disperse freely across the workshop. Canvas enclosures also reduce ambient noise levels, which is particularly beneficial in facilities running multiple welding stations simultaneously. Because the curtains are supplied on rolling hardware or with grommet fixings, reconfiguring the enclosure layout as production demands change is a straightforward task that does not require specialist contractors.
Straightforward Installation
Canvas welding curtains are supplied with grommets along the top edge, enabling fast hanging with or without a curtain track system.
Hot-Works Approved
AKON canvas welding curtains are certified flame retardant, providing dependable fire-resistant protection for demanding industrial welding and grinding applications.
Protects Welders
Canvas welding curtain walls are ideal for shielding operatives from arc flash, radiant heat, and sparks that present a serious safety hazard in busy fabrication environments.
Noise Reduction
The thick, dense canvas material absorbs and attenuates workshop noise levels, creating a noticeably quieter environment for nearby personnel.
Portable Canvas Welding Screens
When you need to reposition your canvas welding protection regularly, portable canvas welding screens are the answer. The shields are constructed from the same industrial canvas material as the side-to-side curtains, mounted on sturdy freestanding frames with castors for easy movement around the workshop.
