Custom Fitted vs Off-the-Shelf Sandbox Covers

Off-the-shelf sandbox covers come in 3 or 4 standard sizes that rarely match the actual dimensions of commercial sand pits, leaving gaps where contamination enters.

Standard sizes available from most suppliers are 1.2 m, 1.5 m, and 1.8 m squares. Some offer a 2.4 m option. That covers rectangular domestic sand pits reasonably well.

Where Standard Sizes Fail

Commercial sand pits in schools, nurseries, and playgrounds are rarely standard shapes. Octagonal, circular, L-shaped, and freeform pits are common. A square cover draped over a circular pit leaves exposed corners. A cover that is too small leaves the edges uncovered. A cover that is too large bunches up and collects water.

Gaps of even 50 mm are enough for cats, foxes, and birds to access the sand. A cover that does not fit the pit does not protect the pit.

Built-in sand pits with raised timber or brick edging need covers that match the internal dimensions precisely. Off-the-shelf covers cannot account for the lip, step, or overhang of a custom surround.

When Off-the-Shelf Is Fine

For a standard rectangular domestic sandbox (1.2 m or 1.5 m square), a pre-made cover works well. The shapes match, the size options are close enough, and the cost difference does not justify custom manufacturing.

For everything else, custom is the practical choice. The cost difference between a standard and custom cover is typically £20 to £60. That premium buys a cover that fits exactly, seals completely, and lasts the full 5 to 8 years without the gaps and pooling problems that shorten the life of ill-fitting covers.

How We Measure and Fit Custom Sandbox Covers

You send us your dimensions, we cut the cover to shape with a 50 mm overhang, and you choose the fastening method that suits your pit design.

The process is straightforward. We have fitted covers to sand pits of every shape and size across the UK and Ireland, from small domestic boxes to large playground installations with irregular perimeters.

Sending Us Your Measurements

For rectangular pits, we need the internal length and width. For circular pits, we need the diameter. For irregular shapes, a simple sketch with key dimensions is enough. Photos of the pit from above are helpful but not essential.

Measure the internal dimensions of the pit at sand level, not the top of the surround. We add 50 mm overhang on all sides to ensure full coverage and allow for fastening.

If your pit has a raised edge, timber surround, or brick wall, note the height and width of the surround so we can account for it in the cut.

Choosing the Right Fastening

We offer four fastening options depending on your pit design and usage pattern.

Weighted hems use sand or chain sewn into the hem to hold the cover in place by gravity. No pegs, no straps, no hardware. Ideal for pits on hard surfaces where you cannot drive pegs. See our weighted sandbox covers for details.

Grommet and peg fastening uses brass grommets spaced every 300 to 450 mm around the perimeter with ground pegs or stakes. Best for grass or soft ground installations.

Elastic edges stretch over the pit surround like a fitted sheet. Quick to fit and remove for daily use. Best for pits with a raised timber or plastic frame.

Tie-down straps with buckles secure the cover to fixed anchor points around the pit. Best for high-wind locations or pits where the cover stays on for extended periods.
